Instruments
At the helm the boat is equipped with Raymarine ST60 Tridata and a Garmin 162 GPS.
The wind indicator shows wind from the mast head. It appears to be aligned correctly. You can adjust the wind setting to be True (actual) or Apparent (true and boat speed calculated). The boat will sail about 45 degrees to the wind, but the best angle for upwind sailing is 55-60 degrees.
It is important to watch the wind indicator so you know when to reef.
First Reef is at 22 knots
Second is at 28 knots
Third is at 35 knots.
The Depth is currently set in feet, but can be changed to Meters. Hold the left two buttons for 2 seconds, that will show CAL, from their it will be very obvious. Hold the 2 left buttons again to save the new setting.
The Auto pilot is great. However the caveat is, YOU MUST MAINTAIN A BRIDGE WATCH. To start Auto (Otto as we call him) you just hit Auto, to have Manual drive, hit standby.
To steer on the wind vane, hit Auto and Standby at the same time.
To change directions, use the 1 or 10 buttons. To turn 90 degrees, hit the 1 and 10 at the same time. This is good for autotacking, however it is a cat so you will need to hit 1 & 10 then 10 about 3 more times for a proper tacking angle. Example: currently at 60 degrees off the wind, you will need to tack 120 degrees to be at 60 on the next heading. So 1 & 10 = 90 + 10 three times.
In late March the Garmin 162 should hopefully have all the charts loaded for the BVI area. It has many waypoints set that are correct. Please do not mess with the existing waypoints. You are welcome to add some if needed.
One of the important features of the GPS is the "Man Over Board" button. If something or someone falls off the boat, immediately hit the NAV/mob button twice. This will setup navigation back to the spot the item went over.
The GPS will give more accurate speed information than the speed log. Remember that it takes a few seconds for the GPS to record speed changes.
